Light therapy is definitely experiencing a surge in popularity. You can now buy illuminated devices for everything from dermatological concerns and fine lines to aching tissues and oral inflammation, recently introduced is an oral care tool enhanced with miniature red light sources, described by its makers as “a significant discovery in personal mouth health.” Worldwide, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, that employ light waves rather than traditional heat sources, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. As claimed by enthusiasts, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, stimulating skin elasticity, soothing sore muscles, reducing swelling and persistent medical issues as well as supporting brain health.
“It appears somewhat mystical,” says a Durham University professor, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Naturally, we know light influences biological functions. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, too, stimulating neurotransmitter and hormone production during daytime, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Artificial sun lamps are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Undoubtedly, light plays a vital role in human health.
While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. During advanced medical investigations, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, determining the precise frequency is essential. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, which runs the spectrum from the lowest-energy, longest wavelengths (radio waves) to short-wavelength gamma rays. Light-based treatment uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).
UV light has been used by medical dermatologists for many years for addressing long-term dermatological issues like vitiligo. It affects cellular immune responses, “and suppresses swelling,” explains a skin specialist. “Considerable data validates phototherapy.” UVA goes deeper into the skin than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (usually producing colored light emissions) “generally affect surface layers.”
Potential UVB consequences, including sunburn or skin darkening, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – which minimises the risks. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, so the dosage is monitored,” says Ho. Most importantly, the light sources are adjusted by technical experts, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where oversight might be limited, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”
Colored light diodes, he notes, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, but could assist with specific concerns.” Red LEDs, it is proposed, improve circulatory function, oxygen uptake and dermal rejuvenation, and stimulate collagen production – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Research exists,” states the dermatologist. “Although it’s not strong.” Nevertheless, amid the sea of devices now available, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, ideal distance from skin surface, if benefits outweigh potential risks. Numerous concerns persist.”
Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, microorganisms connected to breakouts. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – even though, notes the dermatologist, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he says, though when purchasing home devices, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. If it’s not medically certified, oversight remains ambiguous.”
Meanwhile, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, researchers have been testing neural cells, discovering multiple mechanisms for infrared’s cellular benefits. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he says. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that claims seem exaggerated. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.
The researcher primarily focuses on pharmaceutical solutions for brain disorders, though twenty years earlier, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he says. “I remained doubtful. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, that nobody believed did anything biological.”
Its beneficial characteristic, though, was that it travelled through water easily, allowing substantial bodily penetration.
More evidence was emerging at the time that infrared light targeted the mitochondria in cells. These organelles generate cellular energy, creating power for cellular operations. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, even within brain tissue,” explains the neuroscientist, who, as a neuroscientist, decided to focus the research on brain cells. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is generally advantageous.”
With specific frequency application, mitochondria also produce a small amount of a molecule known as reactive oxygen species. In limited quantities these molecules, says Chazot, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”
These processes show potential for neurological conditions: antioxidant, inflammation reduction, and pro-autophagy – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.
The last time Chazot checked the literature on using the 1070 wavelength on human dementia patients, he states, several hundred individuals participated in various investigations, comprising his early research projects
